An international parcel is handled many times before it reaches the recipient. It is loaded and unloaded at collection, at the origin hub, onto and off an aircraft or container, through customs and again on the final delivery route. Packing it well is the single easiest way to make sure it arrives in the same condition it left.
Pack every parcel as if it will be stacked, dropped and turned upside down at least once on its journey.
Start with a new, rigid double-wall box that is only a little larger than the contents. Used boxes lose much of their strength, and a box that is too big lets items move and crush. Wrap each item on its own and leave around 5 cm of cushioning on every side, using bubble wrap, foam or tightly packed paper. Fill every gap so nothing shifts when you shake the box. Seal all seams with strong H-pattern taping rather than a single strip across the middle, and use proper packing tape, not household tape. Put a copy of the delivery address and your contact details inside the box as well, so it can be identified if the outer label is damaged.
Remove or cover every old label and barcode on a reused box before shipping. Liquids should be sealed in leak-proof containers and bagged, and batteries, aerosols, perfumes and other restricted items need to be declared, because many cannot travel by air at all. Finally, weigh and measure the packed box, not the contents alone. The packed size is what the carrier charges for, and giving us accurate figures when you request a quote means the price you approve is the price you pay.
